USA Africa Dialogue Series - The Economist: Binding books

Binding books

Oct 25th 2012, 16:16 by T.C. AND K.N.C.

EVERYONE will be familiar with the frustration of losing a favourite book. But losing an entire library is another thing altogether. Martin Bekkelund, a Norwegian technology writer, recently blogged about a woman whose e-reader had been wiped by Amazon because it claimed her account was linked to a previously blocked account. Her books were unreadable and no refund was offered.

Though it now appears that the woman's e-books have since been restored, this incident is hardly a first. In 2009, a copyright problem led to Amazon remotely deleting copies of "Animal Farm" and "1984", two books by George Orwell, from thousands of Kindles (and proving, once again, that reality often outdoes fiction). That time, the company offered refunds, and its founder, Jeff Bezos, eventually apologised to his customers.

It may come as a surprise that this sort of thing is even possible. After all, a high-street bookseller would not spontaneously remove paperbacks from a customer's home, whatever infractions they may have committed. But, unlike with paper books, customers do not actually "own" the e-books they buy. Instead, they are licensed to the purchaser. Customers cannot resell them and there are restrictions on lending them. The transaction is more like renting access to a book than owning one outright. Plus, e-book sellers have the capability to take them back without warning.

The furious backlash against Amazon's Orwell deletions in 2009 suggests that many customers do not realise this distinction. (Those that do are clued-up on software of dubious legality that can strip the electronic locks—called "digital rights management", or DRM—from e-books.) Yet this lack of awareness of the legal terms-of-use is largely the fault of the e-book sellers. Their websites talk of "buying" books as if the digital transaction is exactly the same as one in a bookshop. And the explanation that customers are, in effect, merely "renting" their e-books is buried in long, jargon-filled license agreements that almost nobody reads.

Why are e-book buyers faced with this encumbrance? Amazon and others have never fully set out their position. But a likely reason is that publishing digital editions opens up a new form of vulnerability to the business. At the moment, people typically share or resell their books in moderation. (A well-thumbed tome has a low resale value anyway.) And they keep them shelved neatly in a sitting room, in order to have information at their fingertips and to serve as a discreet testament to one's character—or perhaps a form of self-congratulation to one's vanity.

All of this is lost with e-books: they don't suffer from wear and tear, can be transferred at the speed of light and a digital copy may seem less valuable than a tangible one. Booksellers and publishers might reasonably fear that the sale of a single e-book could result in it being shared or resold many times over, denying the author and publisher income from their product. The threat of illegal copying must be taken into account too.

In this view, publishers and booksellers have an interest in licensing e-books and retaining control over their distribution and secondary uses. After all, e-books are a new format and a different product. If the business model needs to change, goes the argument, why shouldn't the terms-of-use and legal rights associated with the product change as well? But, if this is the case, there should be transparency for the customer too.

USA Africa Dialogue Series - Poll: Voters say President Obama will win

A group of people who have accurately predicted the winner of the popular vote in the past four presidential elections thinks President Barack Obama is headed for a second term: the American people.
Fifty-four percent of Americans think Obama will win the election, compared with 32 percent who predict a Romney victory, according to Gallup polling released Wednesday but conducted before Hurricane Sandy struck the East Coast. Eleven percent have no opinion.

Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Breaking News: Romney Is Winning Ohio!!!

On a Very Serious Note:

My
Most Respected and forever Bison Country/The Mecca/The Hilltop/The Real HU....You Know.... colleague Mwalimu Aluko, I have seen many elections during my many years in this good ol US of Way, but never have I seen any election quite like this one. For a man like Romney who had been dismissed by many pundits and so-called expats a long time ago to be poised to win this election leaves a lot for all of us learn about this great country, no matter the final outcome. Obama was simply wrong to believe and peddle the myth that we live in a post-racial society. The only people that have paid the price for the FOOLISHNESS are Afrikans in America, the rest of the Diaspora and the Motherland. When we get our Real "Black President," he will go to bat for us, instead of put his/her re-election interest ahead of our needs.

Prof. Bangura:

There is no doubt about it: you make this Obama/Romney contest very close on USAAfricaDialogue.....my heart races any time I read your Tea-Party-like "Breaking News"....it is like "Has Romney been announced winner?  Was the election moved forward and we Obama-ites did not know about it?"

And there you have it.

Election 2012: Ohio President

Ohio: Romney 50%, Obama 48%

The race for Ohio's Electoral College votes remains very close, but now Mitt Romney now has a two-point advantage.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Ohio Voters shows Romney with 50% support to President Obama's 48%. One percent (1%) likes some other candidate, while another one percent (1%) remains undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Ohio remains a Toss-Up in the Rasmussen Reports Electoral College Projections.  Based on the current projections, Romney would have to win Wisconsin if he loses Ohio in order to move into the White House.

The candidates have been locked in a very tight battle in Ohio since August. A week ago, Romney and Obama were tied in the Buckeye State with 48% support each. This is the first time Romney has taken even a modest lead in the race.

Nearly one-in-three Ohio voters (32%) have already cast their ballots. Obama leads 62% to 36% among these voters. Romney has a large lead among those who still plan to vote. The question of who wins Ohio may come down to whether enough Romney voters get to the polls on Election Day to overcome the president's lead among early voters.

Scott Rasmussen has noted that "Wisconsin May Be The New Ohio."To win the election, Romney will have to win at least one of these two battleground states.

Among all Ohio voters, Romney now has a 12-point lead over the president in voter trust – 53% to 41% - when it comes to the economy. Last week, he had just a seven-point advantage among voters in the state when they were asked which candidate they trusted more to deal with the economy.

Romney's also trusted more by eight points in the areas of job creation and energy policy but leads Obama by just two when it comes to housing issues.

National security has been an area where the president has typically had an advantage over Romney this year. But, the Republican challenger now has a 52% to 42% advantage on the issue.

A dramatic claim but why not, it has some truth behind it, Grommett who has
fought every single austerity cut tonight forced his party to vote for
severe austerity cuts across the EU, we all know the beaurocrats in the EU
would protect their lavish incomes and expences whilst cutting aid to the
    poorist regions of the EU.

Will Grommetts socialist allies in the EU berate him or will they applaud
him for political point scoring against the Coalition

Our vote in the EU is just one and the Government has agreed to use the
Veto against any real term increase, thats the toughest stance of any
government since Margaret Thatcher so all this is just a storm in a teacup.

You don't get it thicko do you. Public funding would prevent political parties relying on funds and influence either from the Unions or big business. Tories have proposed it but Labour have been instructed that it cannot apply to unions

The tory party is a rabble. It's fucking insane - you've got tory

Try using your head Alex, Labour agreed above inflation increases 13 years
running including 2008.09 the height of the depression.

    GBur3 <GBur3@aol.com> Oct 31 05:03PM -0700

Pete, did you read all of my post?

This has nothing to do with labour - who just did their job in being
the opposition and testing government mettle.

Had the tory rebels backed their own PM, the government would have
won. A government with a majority of 80+ had its intentions thwarted
because the leading party can't get its act together.

And it is that division that will make the headlines tomorrow - not
what labour did between 2 and 15 years ago!

The truth is Jar rationing has existed in the NHS since its inception
though the thought crossed my mind had this been a gay decease mainly self
inflicted and therefore totally preventable the lobby groups would have
forced governments to fund expensive research and the drugs.

Where did you dig that one up from?
I'm just reminding you of the ever increasing evidence that if you spend more than you earn someone will pay for the consequences.
No it isn't the same as the 70s as Blair wasn't daft enough to revoke the industrial relations legislation which allowed the unions to run riot but there again they have worked out a far better scheme by putting what they hope to be the next gvt in hock to them and as you know he who pays the piper calls the tune

It has been explained affa as living in the global world where companies are given the oppounity of basing themselves where they pay least tax. But you know that don't you. To overcome this problem it would need global agreement as no one country would take the risk of going it alone but again this has been in the public knowledge for some considerable time.
Last time it was these companies that helped us out of the mess and if they can access finance on a commercial basis they can do it again

Oh dear on the whole yet another bad day for the tits up tories...Austerity
will raise UK's debt burden, warns Niesr Britain's sweeping austerity cuts
are stifling economic growth and raising rather than lowering the country's
debt burden, according to the National Institute for Economic and Social
    Research (Niesr).
[image: Britain's sweeping austerity cuts are stifling economic growth
and raising rather than lowering the country's debt burden, according to a
    respected think-tank.]
*The think-tank said that while in "normal" economic times, fiscal
consolidation would lead to a fall in Britain's debt pile, central banks
including the Bank of England were already at the limit of what they could
do to offset the impact of cuts through loose monetary policy and
quantitative easing. Photo: AFP PHOTO/BEN STANSALL*

The respected think-tank said that Britain's debt to gross domestic
product (GDP) ratio will be 4.85 percentage points higher by 2013 because
of the spending cuts and tax rises introduced by the Coalition government.

The think-tank said that while in "normal" economic times, fiscal
consolidation would lead to a fall in Britain's debt pile, central banks
were already at the limit of what they could do to offset the impact of
cuts through loose monetary policy and quantitative easing.

"It is unclear whether 'exceptional' monetary easing measures will
eventually translate into easier credit terms when banking systems remain
so heavily impaired by trading book losses and persistent pressure on loan
book assets," the report said. "In current circumstances, fiscal
consolidation is indeed likely to be self-defeating."

The Niesr also said that "co-ordinated deficit cutting" across the EU was
making matters worse, because close trade ties would inevitably lead to
    "spillover effects" in other countries.

It said that with the exception of Ireland, debt ratios will be higher in
2013 in every EU country due to austerity measures.

"Not only would growth have been higher if such policies had not been
pursued, but debt-to-GDP ratios would have been lower," said Niesr
economists Jonathan Portes and Dawn Holland.

"It is ironic that, given that the EU was set up in part to avoid
coordination failures in economic policy, it should deliver the exact
    opposite."

In Greece, where cumulative spending cuts and tax increases from 2011 to
2013 will amount to around 10pc of GDP, austerity will increase the
country's debt burden by 32.4 percentage points, according to the Niesr.

Greece's debt-to-GDP ratio has continued to climb since the onset of the
2008 financial crisis, *despite having €100bn shaved off its debt mountain
    this year<http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/debt-crisis-live/9132596/Debt-crisis-and-Greek-bond-swap-as-it-happened-March-9-2012.html>
    *.

On Wednesday, Yannis Stournaras, Greece's finance minister, presented the
country's 2013 budget to parliament. The country's debt pile is now
expected to soar to almost 190pc of GDP next year, from 165.3pc in 2011.

Earlier this month, the *International Monetary Fund said that it had
underestimated the negative effects of spending cuts and tax increases on
    growth<http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/finance/ambroseevans-pritchard/100020504/multiplying-europes-fiscal-suicide-technical/>
    *.

It had previously assumed a "fiscal multiplier" of 0.5, which meant cuts
worth 1pc of GDP would cut output by half as much, or around 0.5pc over two
years. Citing "informal evidence" the IMF admitted that "actual multipliers
may be higher, in the range of 0.9 to 1.7."

The IMF also said that efforts to slash deficits and debt may have actually
hurt growth because they were too widespread and had been implemented too
    quickly.

Writing in the *Guardian*, Mr Portes *compared austerity in Europe to a
    "suicide pact"<http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/oct/30/european-suicide-pact-fiscal-consolidation?newsfeed=true>
    *.

"What we have seen in Europe is the creation of a death spiral of deficit
cutting, leading to reduced growth – which leads to reduced revenues and
pressure to cut deficits faster. Paradoxically the EU was set up in part to
avoid such problems by allowing members to co-operate to secure better
    outcomes," he said.

Last week, Chancellor *George Osborne used the surprise 1pc surge in third
quarter growth to insist that the economy was "healing"<http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/georgeosborne/9632964/George-Osborne-still-long-way-to-go-on-economy-despite-GDP-figures.html>
    *.

"There is still a long way to go, but these figures show we are on the
    right track," he said.

Draft Communications Bill: May says web monitoring will save lives

Plans to monitor all Britons' online activity are needed to help society
fight crime and "save lives", Home Secretary Theresa May has said.

Under draft plans, service providers will have to store details of all
internet use in the UK for a year.

But Mrs May said the police would only see the details if they had a "clear
    case" and investigative justification.

It was a myth it would allow the government "to read everyone's e-mails",
    she added.

Mrs May is defending the proposals as she appears before a special
committee of MPs and peers which is scrutinising the plans.

The proposals would require firms to retain the basic details of people's
activity on websites, social networking sites, webmail, internet phone
calls and online gaming for a year and release it if required.

She said "a number of myths" had arisen about the proposals "such as it was
going to enable the government to read everyone's e-mails which it plainly,
    obviously, is not".

    Who, when where and how'

The authorities would not gain routine access to the content of people's
conversations as the scope of the proposed powers would be limited to the
"who, when, where and how" of communications.

It plainly and obviously *would* allow the Gvt to read everyone's emails
and all other internet activity, including monitoring message boards and
    other user groups.

"The police would only see the details if they had a "clear case". Yep,
and the police are known for their skills at manufacturing 'clear' cases.
Especially when a copper is acting as an agent provocateur.
